The History of Bill Haley & The Comets

Bill Haley (born as William John Clifton Haley, Jr.) started singing in his early 20’s with various bands before signing as "Bill Haley & The Comets" in 1952 on the Essex label, and then signed on with Decca in 1954.

Bill Haley & The Comets (original Comets - Danny Cedrone (lead guitar), Joey D’Ambrose (sax), Billy Williamson (steel guitar), Johnny Grande (piano), Marshall Lytle (bass) and Dick Richards (drums) ) are really known as the group that wrote and produced the #1 Best Seller "Rock Around The Clock" (We’re Gonna), a tune that became known as the seminal hit of rock ‘n roll. However, the hit "Crazy Man Crazy" was recorded in 1953, before "Rock Around The Clock" and went to #12 after being on the charts for only 10 weeks. Therefore, "Crazy Man, Crazy" may be considered by some as THE first real rock ‘n roll hit of Bill Haley & The Comets; a tune that has an r&b flair.

Another hit, "Fractured", debuted on the charts at #24 in 1953.

For true rock ‘n roll fans, "Bill Haley & The Comets" were the real pioneers of rock ‘n roll - a golden gem in their time.
